KATHMANDU, APRIL 14
The Supreme Court has issued an order instructing the Speaker of the Sudurpaschim Province Assembly not to enforce its decision to remove Indira Giri, leader of the Nagarik Unmukti Party (NUP), from her position as a member of the Province Assembly.
A single bench of Justice Prakashman Singh Raut issued the interim order on Sunday, staying the Province Assembly secretariat's notice that relieved Giri from her post.
The interim order stated that petitioner Giri was not given an opportunity to be heard before the notice of her dismissal was issued.
The Province Assembly secretariat had issued the notice of her dismissal on April 8, following the direction of Speaker Bhim Bahadur Bhandari. Speaker Bhandari had acted upon a letter submitted to him by NUP Chair Ranjita Shrestha, recalling Giri from her position. Giri serves as a representative in the proportional category.
The Supreme Court has ordered a halt to any action against Giri until the resolution of the writ petition.
