School for hearing-impaired sans trained teachers

Dolakha, October 3

The only deaf school in Dolakha has teachers who cannot use sign language.

There are 23 hearing-impaired children at Bhimeshwor Deaf Primary School at Bhimeshwor Municipality-1. The school has seven teachers, none of whom are trained to teach students with hearing loss.

School head teacher Bidhya Karki said presence of seven teachers was pointless.

However, frequent transfer of teachers has affected teaching-learning activities in the school. Karki blamed frequent transfer of teachers by the District Education Office for the school’s current state. She also expressed worry about the future of her students.

Students complained that teachers did not know sign language and hence they were of no use to them. Various organisations donated Rs 14.6 million to construct the school building, but children are still deprived of education, said Karki.

Parents of hearing-impaired students accused the DEO and some individuals of making the school their begging bowl.

Dolakha Deaf Union Chair Bishnu Karki said the school for the deaf was in a mess. He demanded that the DEO depute trained teachers.
