Scrub typhus test kits in short supply in Chitwan

CHITWAN: At a time when the infectious disease scrub typhus is spreading, test kits needed to examine the infection are in short supply in Chitwan district, which is already hit worst.

The patients suffering from scrub typhus are forced to head to Kathmandu as treatment remains in the district recording the highest number of patients in this season.

The disease was being treated only at the Chitwan Medical College in the district; but from Tuesday, the College found itself in shortage of testing kits, Administrator Dr Dayaram Lamsal said.

The scrub typhus patients have been found in 20 districts of Nepal. The government had officially declared it an epidemic in the country last year and it is spreading into various districts, Epidemiology and Disease Control Division's Epidemiology Section Chief, Gunnidhi Sharma said.

Headache, high fever, sweating, swollen gland and rashes around neck and throat are symptoms of the disease.
