Security tightened at eastern border points

Biratnagar, September 15

Police have beefed up security at border points in the eastern part of the country keeping in view the possible entry of Rohingya refugees displaced from Myanmar.

Police said security had been tightened at border points in Jhapa, Morang, Sunsari and Ilam. “We have been closely watching people’s movement at border points for the last six days,” DIG Pashupati Upadhyay said, adding, “No one has entered the country till date”.

“A special police team has been mobilised to stop the possible entry of Rohingya refugees into Nepal,” said DIG Upadhyay.

According to Upadhyay, Biratnagar’s Rani, Jhapa’s Kakdvitta, and Ilam’s Pashupatinagar are under close surveillance of police. “No Rohingya refugee has entered into the country so far,” he added. DIG Upadhyay pledged to punish if anyone found negligent on duty.

Myanmar’s army has been meting out torture to Islamic ethnic minorities known as Rohingya. Various international media have reported that more than 370,000 Rohingya people have reached Bangladesh to take shelter following violent incidents in Myanmar.
