Nepal earthquake: ML 4.4 tremor in Dolakha, significant one after 68 days

KATHMANDU: National Seismological Centre recorded an earthquake on Saturday evening, with its epicentre in Dolakha district of eastern Nepal.

The tremor, which was of local magnitude 4.4, has been listed as an aftershock of the 2015  Nepal earthquake series.

Recorded at 5:58 am, it was felt in neighgouring districts and the Kathmandu Valley also.

The coordinates provided by the NSC suggested that the tremor originated from an area that lies between Lapilang and Sundrawati, north of the district headquarters Charikot.

The most powerful aftershock of the ML 7.6 earthquake had hit Dolakha on May 12, 2015. It was of local magnitude 6.9.

The last significant aftershock of the Nepal earthquake series was recorded on November 28, 68 days ago, in the border area of Ramechhap and Solukhumbu districts, bordering Dolakha.

Thousands of aftershocks followed the main event, which struck Gorkha district on April 25, 2015. But both the frequency and the size of seismic activities have gone down gradually.

Around 9,000 people were killed in the 2015 earthquakes with most of the fatalities caused on April 25 and May 12.
