Culprit arrested

Siraha police have arrested a person on the charge of accusing a woman of practising witchcraft and torturing her, in Aurahi Rural Municipality-5 on Sunday.

According to police, Ghuran Sah (29) has been arrested for beating and forcefully feeding human excreta to the 50-year-old woman.

"Although the incident has come to our attention, in the lack of official report that needs to be filed at the police office, details of the case is yet to be cleared," informed Superintendent of Police (SP) Sudeep Rajbhandari, Chief of District Police Office, Siraha. "We are trying to bring the victim to the district to know more about the incident so that we could get a clear picture of the case." Meanwhile, Police have arrested the victim's nephew Sah while others involved in the incident are absconding, SP Rajbhandari added.

The victim has accused her husband's brother's sons and their wives of torturing her accusing her of killing their cow by practising witchcraft. According to her, Sah beat her and forced her into the floor while nieces-in-law Kaushila, Nisha and Kabita fed her faeces.

The victim resides at her home with two daughters and one son while her husband is in India for work. She was attacked when she was alone at home with her elder daughter.

She has demanded action against the culprits. However, it has been reported that the locals are pressurising the victim to keep the incident under wraps and not go to the police.

Police have reached the victim's home following the incident.

The Criminal Code Act stipulates stringent action against those involved in the inhuman treatment of a man or a woman by accusing him or her of practising 'witchcraft'.

According to Section 168 of the act, the perpetrator of such activities shall be liable to a jail sentence of up to five years, along with a fine of up to Rs 50,000.
