Snow adds to quake victims’ woes

Sudden snowfall after rains has affected earthquake victims in northern Ramechhap.

Life at Gumdel, Bamti, Preeti, Chuchure and Those of Umakunda Rural Municipality has been adversely affected due to rain and snowfall since yesterday morning. Quake victims at Daduwa and Doramba of Doramba Rural Municipality are also facing problems due to adverse weather.

Ward secretary Ganesh Thapa of Gumdel told via phone that villagers had not been able to come out of their houses due to extreme cold. He said elderly people, children, new mothers and asthmatic patients have been particularly affected by the change in weather. Also, snowfall has affected quake victims in Dolakha. Elderly people and children have had to bear the brunt of severe chill caused by heavy snowfall that has blanketed the upper belt of the district since yesterday.

As per reports, places such as Kharidhunga, Kuri Ghyangdanda, Tutuwan and Jiri of the district have been covered with a thick sheet of snow. “With snowfall, the weather has become extremely cold and that has affected quake victims who are staying in huts made with Zinc sheets,” said Sher Bahadur Shrestha of Shailung.

He added that the elderly and children had fallen ill due to excessive cold. According to Rabichandra Ghimire, a teacher at Kharidhunga-based Surke Secondary School, they have not been able to conduct regular classes after it snowed.

Meanwhile, a large number of tourists from as far as Kathmandu and Sindhupalchowk have flocked to Kharidhunga to play with snow.
