KATHMANDU, JANUARY 14

The Hong Kong-based Sowers Action has built shelters for 25 of the flood-affected household in Helambu Rural Municipality, in collaboration with Volunteer Corps Nepal (VCN), a local partner.

Helambu was hit by flash floods on June 15 and 31, causing damage to 317 homes.

Sowers Action had also teamed up with VCN for an early flood response following the catastrophe. Following the disaster, a Recovery Project was immediately launched, under which 25 houses have been constructed in Helambu-3, 4 and 7.

Along with this, the Cash for Work scheme was also introduced by the project, where the affected population would work in houses construction and get paid for their work.

In addition, 125 households including the 25 families that were provided with the shelters were provided with agricultural toolkits and high-quality seeds of 4 different vegetables, to assist them support themselves via agriculture.

A Handover ceremony was carried out on January 12 where the beneficiaries received shelters as well as agricultural assistance.

The event was attended by former Information and Communication Minister Mohan Bahadur Basnet, Patron of VCN MVO Kumar Gurung -MVO, Ward Chairperson Raj Kumar Lamichine, VCN President Deepak Chapagain, VCN Vice President Radha Matangi, VCN's working team, community members, volunteers, and other stakeholders.

"I was worried to have become homeless at this old age. But this organisation offered a huge help to us. We are very grateful to them. Shanta Ram Tamang, one of the recipients, stated, "I just want to say thank you from the core of my heart"

Similarly, the president at VCN Deepak Chapagain expressed his happiness on being able to reduce the pain of the affected people. He articulated his wish of touching more lives through similar work in the coming days.
