KATHMANDU, MAY 11

A team of climbers from Seven Summit Treks opened a climbing route to the summit of the world's third highest mountain.

According to SST chairman Mingma Sherpa, a team of five Sherpa climbers from SST fixed a route at the death zone of Mt Kanchenjunga becoming the first to scale the mountain this season.

"Lhakpa Temba Sherpa, Ngima Dorchi Sherpa, Phur Sona Sherpa, Gyalu Sherpa, and Chhangba Sherpa reached the summit by fixing route above 8,000m yesterday," Mingma said.

SST team fixed the most difficult section of the route on Kanchenjunga placing nearly 400 metres of ropes above 8,000m, Mingma shared.

Earlier, the designated fixing-team led by British climber Nims Purja returned back from the mountain without completing the task even they stayed there for over two months, according to him.

"It is extremely hard to set the route rather than hanging in the ropes fixed by others," Mingma shared recounting the challenges faced by SST rope-fixing members.

At least 75 international climbers will be attempting to scale Kanchenjunga after the route was opened, he said.

Meanwhile, Flutura Ibrahimi, widely Known as Uta, from Kosovo joined the 14x8000ers Club as she scaled Kanchenjunga, said SST Expedition Director Chhang Dawa Sherpa. "On May 10, she reached the summit of Kangchenjunga (8,586m), the world's third-highest peak, marking her final ascent in this remarkable journey," he said.

At least two climbers- a French and another British national- are awaiting rescue above 7,000m on Kanchenjunga after they were taken ill, according to Sherpa. A team of Sherpa climbers were on their way to rescue them, he added.
