‘Statute amendment essential to address Madhes issues’

BIRATNAGAR: Madhesi Janadhikar Forum-Democratic (MJF-D) Chairman Bijay Kumar Gachhadar said that Constitution amendment was necessary to address Madhes issues.

Talking to mediapersons at Biratnagar Airport on Wednesday, he said that the government should hold consultations with the main opposition and other political parties including Madhes-based ones to reach a consensus to register the Constitution amendment proposal.

He also claimed that the government was not serious over amending the Constitution.

Taking reservations over the proposal to set up local units on the basis of Ilaka of the District Development Committee and terming it unscientific, he stressed the need for determining the number of local bodies and drawing provincial boundaries on the basis of consensus among all the political parties.

He further said that local body elections are the first priority for the Constitution implementation and urged the Local Body Restructuring Commission, the government and major political parties to find a consensus to settle the disputed issues hovering over the restructuring of local bodies.
