‘Statute amendment after polls’

Ramechhap, July 23

Senior CPN-UML leader Madhav Kumar Nepal has said the constitution could be amended on the ground of necessity  only after completion of all levels of elections.

Speaking at a programme marking the Memorial Day of leader Puspalal in Bhangeri, Ramechhap,  today, Nepal reasoned that the demand for amendment of the statute was only Rastriya Janata Party-Nepal’s demand rather than that of the people of Madhes.

“The UML is ready to amend the statute if it is in the interest of the country and the people here, but that too will happen only after elections of all levels,” said Nepal, charging that parties ‘with poor support base among the people’ were afraid of elections.

Further, pointing to the urgency to hold both provincial and federal elections within the stipulated deadline, the UML leader claimed that the UML would be the biggest party in the upcoming elections and run the country for

five years.

Meanwhile, police detained three persons overnight in Ramechhap in connection with the vandalism of Nepal’s vehicle in Ramechhap Bazaar yesterday. While one of them was released yesterday, the other two were freed today.

Police have said investigation is under way. Nepali Congress, however, condemned the arrest of its cadres for alleged vandalism in a press statement today.
