Strike affects services in local bodies

KATHMANDU: Regular activities at local bodies in the Eastern Region were halted today due to the agitation of the staffers.

The local body employees have been agitating for the last 10 days demanding a pay rise and promotion, among others. As part of their agitation, they halted all the works beginning today. They have barred the chiefs from entering offices since December 5.

Works in 72 VDCs, 14 municipalities and 16 DDCs have been affected in the region as

a result. The employees have also demanded implementing previous agreements, threatening to shut the local bodies across the country indefinitely beginning December 20 if the demands were not met.

Local Bodies’ Joint Movement Operation Central Coordination Committee urged all three unions to protest demanding facilities at par with with civil servants. The unions in a joint statement have said that services in the metropolis would be halted indefinitely.
