Strong winds damage properties worth millions in Kailali

DHANGADI: Strong winds accompanied by hailstones have wrecked properties worth millions in Kailali district.

Bardagoriya Rural Municipality and Gauriganga Municipality were affected the most by the storm that took place on Monday night. According to District Police Office, Kailali the storm damaged the roof on houses of five locals of Basantapur, Bardagoriya Rural Municipality-4.

Similarly, houses in Janaki Rural Municipality in the district have been affected. Roofs of more than dozen houses in wards 6 and 7 of Tikapur Municipality were also blown away. According to Tup KC, President of Nepal Red Cross Society, Narayanpur Sub-division, the storm has demolished some houses as well.

Banana farms worth millions have also been affected by Monday's storm. Kailali Banana Producers and Entrepreneurs Association pronounced that about 50 per cent of banana farms have been destroyed. According to Tekendra Dhami, President of the Association, 30 per cent of banana plants fell and 20 per cent of the plants are in a futile state.

Deviram Koirala, a local banana farmer said that the storm that occurred in banana harvesting season has brought about a big loss to the farmers.

More than 100 locals in Tikapur are involved in banana farming but the majority of them have not done insurance of their farms. The hailstorm has also damaged the wheat cultivated land and vegetable farms.
