Students organise bandh to protest bandh culture

BIRGUNJ: Students, who were fed up with frequent closure of education institutions today came to the streets to protest politicisation of education sector.

The students demonstrated at Ghantaghar Chowk by burning tyres. They also gheroaed the District Administration Office. The students, who had reached colleges, were furious after they found their institutions padlocked. Owing to bandhs called by various groups, the institutions in the area have remained closed since Wednesday.

Firoj Ahmed, a 12th grader, said, "Our study has been hampered due to the frequent bandh. We are compelled to come to the streets against the bandh culture.'' Though a meeting of political parties and all the stakeholders held some six months ago had agreed to declare education institutions as bandh-free zone, the agreement is yet to be translated into action.

Meanwhile, a meeting held between the agitating students and Chief District Officer Yadav Koirala agreed to solve the problem. CDO Koirala promised to make decision in favour of the students after a meeting with the stakeholders.

Student leader Nawaraj Yadav said that as per the agreement reached, the students and teachers should stand against the bandh and spread awareness among the local residents.
