Sushil against army integration

BHOJPUR: Acting president of the Nepali Congress Sushil Koirala today said that the danger of internal war will loom large in the country if PLA combatants were integrated in the Nepali Army.

Speaking at a press meet organised by the district chapter of the Federation of Nepalese Journalists here in Bhojpur, Koirala said that the "politically trained" army should not be integrated in the Nepali Army.

He also said that the Maoist combatants could be given the responsibility of guarding the forests, border areas and industrial areas.

Stating that there was also an army maintained by the Nepali Congress during the revolution of 1950, Koirala said,''But they were not integrated in the army.''

Claiming that the Maoists had a policy of imposing totalitarianism in the country by taking over state power, he said, "This is, however, only a day dream of the Maoists.''

Answering a query, he said, "Constitution is meant only for parties that believe in democracy, as such, the Maoist party does not want it to be written.''

He also said that the Maoists were now talking about national independence to hide their faults. He added that he would also vie for the post of the party's president in the upcoming general convention.
