Teachers stage sit-in demanding salary

Teachers serving in public schools of Yamuna Mai Rural Municipality and Rajdevi Municipality in Rautahat today staged a sit-in at District Administration Office, Rautahat.

The teachers were agitated as they had not received their salary of the past four months.

District chair of Nepal Teacher’s Organisation, Manishankar Nidhi, said they were facing a hard time sustaining their livelihood as they were deprived of their due salary. “We were compelled to camp out to pressure the authority concerned. We went to the district administration office, district education office, municipality office and rural municipality office several times, but to no avail,” said Nidhi.

According to him, around 350 teachers have been deprived of their salary.

Following the protest, security personnel freed agitating teachers after keeping them in detention for two hours.

Nepal Teacher’s Association and other teacher unions have expressed their solidarity with the protest. Teacher unions have decided to resort to pen-down strike and camp out at district education office from 10:00am to 4:00pm every day until their remuneration is released.

Yamuna Mai Rural Municipality Chairperson Sriprakash Mukhiya said the problem that had surfaced after the rural municipality was split from Durga Bhagawati Rural Municipality for want of budget.

Likewise, Rajdevi Municipality Mayor Dhirendra Prasad Singh said not only teachers, but also staffers of health, local levels and other offices, have not received their salary after the municipality was split from Gaur Municipality.

Meanwhile, Chief District Officer Uddhav Bahadur Thapa said the authority concerned needed to address and resolve the issues in the district.
