Tension over road mishap grapples Duhabi

ITAHARI: The Duhabi area of Sunsari remained tense throughout the day today after local residents hit the streets over a recent road accident in which two youths were killed. The youths were killed when their motorcycle collided head-on with a tractor.

The demonstrators set ablaze a bus and vandalised two other vehicles. They complained that the police had suppressed their peaceful demonstration. More than five demonstrators were injured in the ensuing clashes.

The irate youths obstructed the Duhabi section of the Koshi Highway saying that the random parking on the street had caused the death of the duo. But as the police used force to clear the obstruction, the youths had set fire and vandalised the vehicles, claimed the demonstrators. A vehicle of the police was also vandalised in the clash.

According to locals, the police had arrested two youths. The police have also arrested the owner of the tractor, Ram Kumar Shah on charges of parking the tractor on the Highway.

Bhadraman Mote, Police Inspector, Area Police Office, Duhabi, said that security personnel have been mobilised to bring the situation under control. He admitted that police had to clash with the youths to take hold of the situation.

On the way to Duhabi from Itahari on Friday night, Mukunda Acharya, 31, of Duhabi-6, was killed on the spot after his motorbike collided with the tractor parked on the street.

Another Ashok Rai, who was seriously injured in the accident, succumbed to injuries while undergoing treatment at BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences, Dharan.
