Terai girls' education status low

KATHMANDU: A recent study by Constituent Assembly (CA) members revealed that educational status of girls in the Tarai districts is not satisfactory vis-à-vis of boys.

The report prepared by 11 CA members, who had spent

three days in Dhanusha and Mahottari and other seven lawmakers who had visited Sarlahi district, came up with such gender-wise differences prevalent in the districts. They were accompanied by government officials and members of various donor agencies.

Speaking at a programme organised by Department of Education, UNICEF and Educational Pages here in the capital today, Sharada Jha, one of the team members, said out of 27 per cent children out of school in Dhanusha and Mahottari, two third are girls.

“Though the oil distribution programme helped a good deal in the enrolment of girls, the ratio is still less as compared to the boys’ population in schools,” she said. She further said that the dropout rate in the schools in those two districts was still 25 per cent.

The CA team also attributed the degrading quality of education to political interference in those districts.

The lawmakers also underscored the need to form separate entity of Girls Education Network to promote girls education and politics free environment in the schools.

CA member Gayatri

Shah, who also participated in Sarlahi visit, said the presence of children in schools was

very nominal and the school education was highly dominated by politics.

She also expressed the need of massive reform and sufficient resources in education sector to ensure quality education to both boys and girls.
