PANCHTHAR, JUNE 15

Three workers injured in the collapse of an under-construction bailey bridge over the Hewa River in Panchthar died during treatment late Saturday night.

The deceased have been identified as Ruplal Chaudhary (22), Rajan Chaudhary (27), and Rakesh Chaudhary (22), all from Simara Sub-Metropolitan City-12, Bara. They died while undergoing treatment at Nobel Medical College in Biratnagar after being referred from Panchthar District Hospital.

The 70-meter-long modular bridge, being constructed by the Road Division Office, Ilam, as part of the Mechi Highway expansion, collapsed during installation on Wednesday, sending six workers into the river. All sustained serious injuries.

The new bridge was being built to replace a 50-meter bailey bridge that was swept away by floods on Asoj 12 last year. It was the second such structure destroyed by flooding - a 45-meter bailey bridge at the same site was also washed away on Asar 2, 2080 BS.

The current bridge project, funded by a grant from the Government of India, is being executed by Super Saugat Light Builders JV at a cost of Rs 34.9 million.
