BAJURA, JANUARY 1

Malnutritioned mother and her baby have been rescued and brought to a Lalitpur-based health facility for treatment after a story on their plight was covered by The Himalayan Times.

Karisma Pariyar, 20, and one-and-halfyears-old minor of Himali Rural Municipality were struggling for life for a want of treatment expenses. Karisma's husband Surendra said that his wife and his son were struggling for life in Bajura Hospital as they were suffering from malnutrition.

They have been receiving treatment in Patan Hospital, Lalitpur. Shanti Sewa Griha, Kathmandu has taken the responsibility for the treatment and accommodation of the poor mother and her child. Director Apsara Karki said that Shanti Sewa had helped the woman and her son for the treatment after reading a story about them in THT. She said that the organisation had even paid the ambulance fare from Bajura and brought them to Kathmandu and started treatment.

The woman is also suffering from mental health issues. Surendra said that he could not take his wife and son to hospital for the treatment as he could not afford the treatment expenses.

Programme Coordinator of Shanti Sewa Griha Bijendra Kunwar said that his organisation had helped the poor after the news story was published about the suffering of the poor family. Doctors said that it would take time to see improvement in the health condition of the woman due to her chronic mental disease while the minor's health was improving.

Surendra said that his wife had suffered excessive bleeding during delivery time some 45 days ago. "Following this she developed mental health issues," said Surendra, added that he was glad to people coming forth to help the poor like him.

The kid became the victim of malnutrition as he was deprived of mother's milk due to her illness. Surendra returned home from India after his wife and son were taken ill.
