TU fee-hike row talks fail

KIRTIPUR: A meeting, held on Thursday, between agitating student unions and the Tribhuvan University (TU) officials ended inconclusively after the latter refused to give in to the demand. Thirteen unions are clamouring for revoking the 10-fold fee-hike decision. Professor Surya Lal Amatya and Professor Bhim Raj Adhikari, rector and registrar of TU, respectively, attended the talks. Himal Sharma, general secretary, All Nepal National Independent Students’ Union-Revolutionary, a UCPN-Maoist wing, said that the talks failed as the TU officials refused to budge from their stand. "The TU hiked the fees without correcting its anomalies. Hence, the university has no option but to roll back its decision,” reasoned Sharma. Earlier, the unions set a 72-hour deadline to the TU to revoke its decision or face consequences. The ultimatum expires on Friday.
