Tribhuvan University, the country's largest and oldest university, organised its 47th Convocation Day today in the presence of selected top students amidst a function held at the Office of the Controller of Examinations in Balkhu.
As many as 29,729 students and scholars who were on the 59th grace list of the university and who had acquired the academic transcript from 15 June 2020 to 14 June 2021 earned graduation today.
The total number of graduates who were felicitated today includes scholars who received their Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and Masters of Philosophy as well. Rest of the students had completed their Master's and Bachelor's degree.
Addressing the function, TU's Chancellor and Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba stressed that the university's education should not be only formal and philosophical but needs to be practical and useful for social development. "The university should focus more on developing the democratic system in the country, enhance the economy and produce skilled students as per the demand of the time," Deuba said.
Today's convocation was chaired by chief guest Professor V Ramagopal Rao, Director of Indian Institute of Technology. Congratulating all the graduates, Rao said the students could help change the country for the better. "The world has evolved to this stage due to relentless struggles of people and young students should face similar struggles and aspire to create jobs rather than seek employment at offices," he reminded.
Similarly, Vice-chancellor of the varsity Dharmakanta Baskota reminded about the 62 years long history and said it had been a beacon of light among the people of far-flung villages and students of under-privileged class. "TU has itself produced all kinds of manpower from leaders to scientists in the country and has become a source of development," he said.
