RAUTAHAT, MARCH 17

Two persons died and two others were seriously injured in a major accident in Brindaban Municipality, Rautahat, on Wednesday night.

According to police, Jitendra Patel, 37, and Hari Kumar Thakur, 27, of Brindaban Municipality died on the spot after they were hit by a pick-up truck at Harshaha Chowk at around 8:30pm. Two policemen are said to have sustained serious injuries in the accident on the Gaur-Chandrapur road section.

Area Police Office Garuda DSP Shreeram Bhandari informed that Assistant Sub-inspector Upendra Prasad Yadav and constable Murtuja Ansari were injured in the accident.

"Constable Ansari's condition was critical, so he had to be taken to Birgunj for treatment at night.

ASI Yadav's treatment is under way in Garuda itself," said the DSP.

Police attributed drinking and driving as the cause behind the accident, saying the tipsy driver behind the wheel had lost control over the vehicle, causing it to plough into parked motorbikes and shops on the roadside.

"Police found some beer bottles inside the vehicle and are investigating the accident by detaining a few people," said the DSP.

Meanwhile, locals have been putting pressure on the police to arrest those involved in the accident from last night itself.

According to locals, suspended PA member Kundan Kushwaha and Maulapur's construction entrepreneur Nagendra Sah were riding in the vehicle when the accident took place.

Reportedly, they fled the scene following the accident and two other persons were later sent to the police over suspicion that they were the ones driving the vehicle.
