KATHMANDU, MARCH 25
Police have arrested two persons, including a woman, with counterfeit Nepali bank notes worth Rs 84,000.
The suspects have been identified as Gan Bahadur Lopchan, 35, of Rautahat and Maya Tamang, 39, of Makawanpur. The cops first arrested Tamang with fake currency of Rs 3,500 while transacting the notes to buy vegetables in Kalanki yesterday. Based on her statement, police raided Lopchan's Kirtipur-based rented room, leading to his arrest with fake notes worth Rs 79,500.
The notes were in the denomination of Rs 1,000 and Rs 500, said Metropolitan Police Range, Teku.
Senior Superintendent of Police Ashok Singh, MPR incharge, informed that meticulous observation was required to identify the fake notes confiscated from Tamang and Lopchan.
Genuine notes are rough when one runs his/her fingers through them, but fake notes lack this feature. Generally, fake currency lacks raised watermark, words and metallic thread - the permanent features of a genuine banknote.
Police have also seized a printer and photocopy papers, among others, used for making fake notes.
Meanwhile, police have appealed to all to be cautious while carrying out cash transactions.
Racketeers often circulate fake notes by tucking them between genuine ones during late hours of the day. The racketeers target unsuspecting shopkeepers for transactions of fake notes.
