KATHMANDU: Two climbers have successfully scaled Mt Pumori in an alpine style, according to the organizers.

Alpinist Climber Expeditions informed that its founder Prakash Sherpa (Pemba) and Christian Jong from The Netherlands, stood atop the 7,161-metre peak on May 13.

Sherpa, an IFMGA guide, said that they decided to scale the peak in an alpine style to promote alpinism in Nepal's Himalayas.

"It was challenging because of the high wind but we never gave up on our climb," Sherpa said, adding that they stood atop the peak at around 7:07 am.

The route was pretty challenging and there was some icy section as well as lots of crevasse, Sherpa said after returning to the base camp, adding, "However, we enjoyed the climb."

The climb starts from the high camp at 5,650 m and involves ascending steep ice and rock walls, traversing crevasses, and navigating through challenging terrain. Climbers need to be skilled in ice and rock climbing, as well as in using crampons and ice axes. "Our team started to move up from Camp 2 at 12:30 am."

According to him, the ascent to the summit of Pumori is typically done in a single push, with climbers moving quickly and efficiently while the climb requires a high level of physical fitness, as well as the ability to manage the risks associated with climbing at high altitudes.

"Alpine style climbing on Pumori is a challenging and rewarding experience that requires a high level of skill, experience, and physical fitness but it is not recommended for beginners or inexperienced climbers, but for those who are up for the challenge, it can be an unforgettable adventure," Sherpa explained. The team also witnessed piles of rubbish left over by the past expeditions at Camp 2.
