Two quarantine posts in offing
India has finally agreed to open two more quarantine check posts at Nepalgunj and Raxual within this month that is expected to allow more access to Nepali agro-products to India.
It remains to be seen how effectively the quarantine check posts are operated to allow access to primary farm products from Nepal to India.
Karkabhitta Check post has been the only entry points of Nepali agriculture
products since long. Nepali farmers have been complaining that Indian authorities had denied their vegetable and other farm products access to Indian markets.
Indian Agriculture minister Ajit Singh, speaking at press conference on Thursday, informed that the check points will be operating by the end of May once the required human resource is in place there.
"We need to send technical experts to the points and by the end of this month people will be in place in the respective points," Minister Singh said.
He said Nepali quarantine certificate can also be accepted but added that there has to be someone to verify it.
Minister Singh, who is here to participate in the 26th FAO regional Conference, also lambasted the recent US decision to grant additional 80 billion dollar agriculture subsidies saying it will hurt the farmers of the developing world.
Agriculture products from US will be far cheaper and it will be hard to for developing countries farmer to compete to this low price, he said.
He also said similar concern was raised during the SAARC agriculture minister meeting on Wednesday.
World Trade Organisations (WTO) paves way for opening trade barrier but the latest US move is against Doha ministerial declaration. The Doha meet has directed the developed countries to slash the agriculture sector subsidies, among others.
