Two Sherpa climbers scale K2 for record third time
KATHMANDU: Two Sherpa climbers successfully scaled the world’s second highest peak for the third time in the summer season making the most successful ascents of K2, according to the expedition organiser.
Ngima Dorchi Sherpa (44) and Lhakpa Temba Sherpa (34), both the residents of Makalu-1 in Sankhuwasabha district, stood atop the 8,611-metre mountain in the northwest of the Karakoram range yesterday, Mingma Sherpa, Chairman at Seven Summit Treks said.
Earlier, the duo had scaled K2, one of the world’s most dangerous mountains to climb, in 2014 and 2018 guiding the international expeditions run by Seven Summit Treks in the summer season, he informed.
“Ngima Dorchi and Lhakpa Temba have also become the only Nepali climbers to have scaled K2 for the third time,” Sherpa said.
According to the climbing record, Pakistani climber Fazal Ali was the only climber in the world to have climbed K2 for the third time when he scaled the savage mountain in 2014, 2017 and 2018 without using supplemental oxygen.
“They will also attempt to climb the mountain for the fourth time next season,” Sherpa said.
