UDMF refuses to accept Constitution amendment bill
KATHMANDU: The United Democratic Madhesi Front (UDMF), an alliance of major Madhes-based parties, on Wednesday said it could not accept the Constituent amendment bill registered by the government yesterday.
The government on Tuesday had moved the bill in a bid to convince the Alliance, which had been agitating against the charter since its promulgation in September last year.
But, the parties held a meeting today and concluded that the bill failed to address demands raised by Madhesis, indigenous communities and other marginalised groups and communities.
"It seems that the proposal cannot address our issues," Federal Socialist Forum-Nepal Chairman Upendra Yadav told media after the UDMF meeting, "We will discuss further to decide our next steps."
The bloc further charged that the government did not seek consent from it for the bill.
Tarai Madhes Democratic Party Chairman Mahantha Thakur, who had chaired the meeting, said the government had agreed in principle to register the bill; but had not held any discussion on contents of the proposal.
A statement issued after the meeting is undersigned by Updendra Yadav of Federal Socialist Forum-Nepal, Mahantha Thakur of Tarai Madhes Democratic Party, Mahendra Prasad Yadav of Tarai Madhes Sadbhavana Party, Anil Jha of Nepal Sadbhawana Party, Raj Kishor Yadav Madhesi Janadhikar Forum-Republican, Manish Suman of Sadbhawana Party and Keshav Jha of Rastriya Madhesh Sadbhawana Party.
Earlier this afternoon, the main opposition CPN-UML has also decided not to accept the Constitution amendment bill and obstruct the House proceedings from tomorrow.
Issuing a separate statement today itself, the FSF-N Chairman Upendra Yadav had already commented that registering the bill without addressing demands raised by the agitators was a blunder on part of the government.
