UK assures continued support to Nepal reconstruction
KATHMANDU: The British government on Friday reassured its help in the post-quake reconstruction and humanitarian response in Nepal.
The Kathmandu-based UK Embassy in a statement stated that the British government would continue to monitor the humanitarian situation and reconstruction works in cooperation with the Government of Nepal in the days to come.
After the devastating earthquake stuck Nepal on April 25 last year, and a strong aftershock on May 12, many families were displaced. As a part of emergency relief campaign, the UK Department for International Development had provided 220,000 people with tarpaulin sheets and over 60,000 people with more substantive temporary shelter, according to the statement.
The British agency also provided people with cash along with warm clothes, blankets and mattresses to fight against the cold, distributed items for daily purposes like kitchen sets, solar lamps, water purification tablets, hygiene kits and dignity kits for women.
As a humanitarian assistance campaign, it had also served with helicopters and airlifted relief materials to the quake-affected areas.
Specialist personnel, medical personnel and trauma expertise had also been deployed for the cause.
Similarly, it also had contributed labour to remove the tonnes of rubble in order to aid the rebuilding process and built temporary displacement homes.
The DFID had raised a total of £70 million (approximately USD 100 million) for quake relief, being one of the largest bilateral donors for the reconstruction purposes, the statement claimed.
In addition, over £85 million was also raised through British citizens in the name of Disaster Emergency Committee (DEC) Nepal.
