UK may write off debts
Kathmandu, February 14:
The British Ambassador to Nepal, Dr Andrew Hall, today indicated that his country was considering writing off some debts of Nepal.
Speaking at an interaction on "Nepal-UK relations in the changing context," Dr Hall said: "I hope in future you will have a chance to hear a good news as the UK is considering to write off some debts of Nepal."
The programme was organised by the National Council for World Affairs.
Britain has written off debts of a few African countries.
He also said that the UK has strategies in Nepal in relation to peace building, and tackling global poverty.
Stating that the Maoists have not yet completely given up threats and intimidation, Dr Hall said that he was hopeful that the Maoists would end such activities soon.
He highlighted the importance of a good coordination between the National Security Council, the Ministry of Defence and the Nepal Army in making the armed forces work under civilian control.
Asked about a Maoist Member of Parliament pressurising a UK embassy official to pay compensation to a retired employee of the embassy, he told journalists that the embassy has received assurances from the Maoist leaders that they have no policy of intimidating Britain and her people.
