KATHMANDU, MARCH 22

The establishment faction of the CPN-UML today issued letters seeking clarification from four of its Standing Committee members - former prime minister Madhav Kumar Nepal, Surendra Prasad Pandey, Ghanashyam Bhusal, and Bhim Rawal. According to CPN-UML central party office Secretary Ishwari Rijal, the letters were delivered to the leaders' houses or offices.

According to Rijal, the party has sought explanation from the rival faction leaders within three days for carrying out factional activities. "What these leaders have been doing is known to all. There is one UML and one programme, one party office, and one party flag, but these leaders are doing parallel activities,"

Rijal said when asked why the party had sought explanation from these leaders.

The letters were signed by the party's General Secretary Ishwar Pokharel.

The establishment faction had called a central committee meeting on Saturday that decided to seek clarification from these leaders for carrying out anti-party activities.

The rival faction led by Madhav Kumar Nepal and Jhalanath Khanal, on the other hand, has said that party Chair and Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli had acted beyond the scope of the party statute by amending the statute and inducting 23 former Maoist leaders in the party's central committee.
