UN mission on IDP meets Army Chief

Kathmandu, April 18:
A high-level UN mission to assess the situation of the Internally Displaced People (IDPs) met the Chief of Army Staff, General Pyar Jung Thapa, at the Royal Nepalese Army Headquarters here today. Prof Walter Kalin, Advisor to the UN Secretary General on IDP issues held a meeting for about half-an-hour with the army chief and other senior officials, said the army.
The UN resident representative Mathew Kahane and David Johnson, Senior Human Rights Advisor to the UN were also present. The mission that had arrived in the capital on April 12 also visited Banke, Bardiya and Nawalparasi districts and met the IDPs, Chief District Officers and local military commanders to assess the situation. Meanwhile, Director of Internally Displaced Department under the Office of Commissioner for Humanitarian Assistance, Dennis Mc Namara, left Kathmandu today, but Prof Kalin is scheduled to meet the press on Friday, said a UNDP official. The team will submit its report on the situation of IDPs to Secretary General Kofi Annan.
