UN urges govt to draft bill on truth panel

Kathmandu, August 3:

The UN High Commission for Human Rights in Nepal today called the government to draft Truth and Reconciliation Commission Bill to form an independent and impartial commission.

Issuing a press release, the United Nations agency said its comments on the bill were submitted to the government yesterday.

It called for inclusion of its suggestions in the bill to ensure the formation of an independent commission.

The UN human rights agency said in the release that the drafted bill did not meet the requirements to form an independent commission, as there was no room to select an independent commissioner based on the bill and expressed its concern about the provision of appointing political activists as commissioners.

The UN agency also expressed concern about sidelining several castes, indigenous communities

and religions.
