UNMIN chief meets DPM, Bhattarai

KATHMANDU: UNMIN chief Karen Landgren today called on acting Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Bijaya Kumar Gachhadar at his office in Singha Durbar to dwell on the ongoing peace process and discharging minor PLA combatants.

Landgren disclosed this to mediapersons after the meeting but she said nothing about the government’s recent decision to extend the UNMIN’s tenure by four months.

The minors are scheduled to be discharged from Sindhuli cantonments on January 7. According to a tripartite agreement among the UN, government and the UCPN-Maoist, the process was to start on December 27 but was put off till January 7.

Landgren also met vice-chairman of the main opposition party, UCPN-Maoist Dr Babu Ram Bhattarai, at latter’s residence in Shantinagar. Dr Bhattarai told her that UNMIN should have got six-month extension. According to Bhattarai’s official website, UNMIN’s presence was necessary until Maoist combatants are integrated and rehabilitated.
