Unprecedented 7-party unity to mark CA polls, says Nepal

Biratnagar, December 26:

CPN-UML general secretary Madhav Kumar Nepal said today the coming constituent assembly polls would be marked by the consensus among the top leadership of the major political parties.

Talking to the media before returning to Kathmandu after a three-day trip to the Tarai region, Nepal said the parties would not field their candidates in constituencies contested by top leaders.

Nepal also said the option of his party reaching an alliance with the Maoists for the election was always open despite the fact that they would be contenders in the polls. He added that this alliance could be broached at all levels.

He said he was not aware of a proposal put forward by UML MPs for amendment to the interim constitution and added that this was against the party’s policy and that such a proposal, if there was any, would be recalled. Ten UML MPs had tabled a proposal on Monday to consider the interim parliament as a fully elected House if the CA polls were not held within the scheduled time.

Nepal expressed satisfaction at the presence of the special task force in the Tarai, saying that the security situation has improved to some extent. He also urged the agitating groups in the Tarai to come to talks table. He said while some of their demands could be met immediately, the others could be addressed in the due course of time and added that the beginning of this process would create an atmosphere conducive for the polls.

Nepal also urged the Maoists and all other organisations not to raise any demand that may jeopardise CA polls.
