Both suffered frostbite, condition stable

KATHMANDU, APRIL 30

After a few episodes of losing and re-establishing contact with Mt Annapurna base camp officials, alpinists Giampaolo Corona and Tim Bogdanov have finally been located, and simultaneously evacuated.

Swedish alpinist Bogdanov, who had earlier gone out contact as he made a last call from Camp IV, has been evacuated to base camp from 7400 m. According to sources, he suffered frostbite but his condition is not critical and is stable at the moment.

Likewise, Italian alpinist Giampaolo Corona who had been spotted on-and-off, losing contact here and coming in contact there, has finally been located and evacuated from 7500m.

He had made contact with base camp officials late Friday evening and reported that he was descending from a new route somewhere at Camp IV after going out of touch. Corona had refused any help offered by the rescue mission, Mingma Sherpa, Chairman at Seven Summit Treks, had earlier told THT.

He too suffered frostbite, but is stable, base camp sources revealed.

A helicopter with search and rescue members had been sent to the region this morning.

Both the alpinists will now be flown in to the capital for further treatment.
