Rescue operations ongoing, bodies of seven recovered

KATHMANDU, JUNE 16

As many as seven persons have died while many others are missing after floods wreaked havoc across various regions of Sidhupalchowk district on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Multiple landslides and floods that have been occurring since yesterday following the incessant rainfall five days after the onset of monsoon have caused heavy damages in Helambu and Melamchi areas.

Bodies of seven people that were earlier reported missing have been recovered, according to Sindhupalchok District Administration Office.

Few others have reportedly gone missing after they were swept away by the Melamchi river, most of them working on site of the Melamchi Drinking Water Project.

Authorities launched search and rescue operations in the disaster-struck areas early Tuesday morning.

Earlier this morning, a team of Nepali Army personnel had reached the affected area and airlifted two persons stranded on the rooftop of a house, in a helicopter.

According to recent reports, multiple bridges over the Melamchi river have been swept away by the overflowing river, while dozens of houses have been damaged after the river enter the settlements.

Details of the missing persons and financial damages incurred by the calamity have yet to be ascertained as the details are still being collected.
