Avalanche hits Upper Mustang, Korala cut off from Jomsom
POKHARA: An avalanche originating from Mount Alichuli has affected Ghami and Surkhani VDCs in Upper Mustang region of Mustang district in Mid-Western Nepal on Sunday.
No human casualty has been reported as the large masses of snow and ice along with boulders fell down from the mountain that lies at Dhakmar of Ghami VDC this morning.
It, however, blocked the road joining Jomsom and Korala, and swept away at least nine wooden bridges at several places, according to Mustang’s Chief District Officer Bhim Raj Pokharel.
Dhakmar lies 70 km east of the district headquarters Jomsom, and 15 km south of Lo Manthang.
Around 500 people live in the adjoining Korala region. Human casualty, however, did not occur because the avalanche-hit area is not inhabited and the incident took place in the morning, according Krishna Bhakta Bramhacharya, the Deputy Brigade Commander of Armed Police Force’s Muktinath Brigade.
The avalanche wreaked havoc on drinking water supply and two water mills as well.
Likewise, the bridge connecting Ghami and Surkhani was also swept away.
Since the avalanche deposited boulders and debris, vehicular movement along the Jomsom-Korala road section has been halted, according Bramhacharya. It would take some days to clean the depositions and resume traffic, he added.
A team of security personnel has been dispatched to Dhakmar to assess the situation, CDO Pokahrel said, but more information is yet to be received from the site.
