Uterine prolapse a major health problem in Kapilvastu
Kapilvastu, October 18:
Records at Kapilvastu district reveal that almost half of the number of women visiting health centres across the district have problems related with uterus, the district public health office said.
In this context, the DPHO and the Nepalgunj Medical College are planning to jointly organised a free medical camp to examine suffering from uterine prolapse, said DPHO chief and medical superintendent of the P Bir Hospital, Dr Altaf Hussain. Many women from the southern region of the district are found to be suffering from the disease and the main cause for this is the lack of health awareness, he said.
The health camps to screen uterine prolapse among are to be organised at Pakadi on October 23 and 24, and at Maharajgunj on October 25 and 27, Dr Hussain said.
Health examination and medicines will be provided for free and also surgery for 50 patients with chronic cases will be done for free with the help of the medical college, Dr Hussain added.
Meanwhile, the number of would-be mothers is also on the rise in the district, the maternity health office said. The estimated number of pregnant women in the district was 18,418 in the last fiscal year and this year it is estimated to be at around 18,961, Anirudra Sribastav of the family health and statistics department said.
Some 14 per cent of the total pregnant women visited the health centres last year and this year this has increased to 23 per cent, he said.Uterine prolapse occurs when the muscle that holds the uterus loosens and the uterus drops down to the vaginal cavity, gynaecologist Dr Dharma Dutt Subedi, said. Many women who suffer from this ailment also develop cancer later, Dr Subedi added.
