Varsities to get VCs before Tihar, promises govt

Kathmandu, October 7 :

With endorsement of the Amendment of Tribhuvan University Act 2016 by the House of Representatives, the chaos ruling the universities in the country is now about to end.

The universities in the country have been badly affected because their top posts have remained vacant from the past five months.

With the new rule in force, the Prime Minister will now be the chancellor of all universities in the country instead of the King, who was the chancellor of the Tribhuvan University and Mahendra Sanskrit University and will be responsible to act to solve the problems ailing the universities.

“Now the Prime Minister will have to work as the head of the universities in the country. The Education Ministry will do the needful at the earliest after the PM forms a selection committee,” said Laba Prasad Tripathee, spokesperson at Education Ministry.

“Appointment of vice-chancellors of the universities will be done before Tihar,” said Tripathee, adding that the education sector has suffered a lot due to technical problems.

The Prime Minister, as the chancellor of the universities, will have to form a three-member selection committee under the co-ordination of Education minister including education secretary and assembly member of the university concerned and recommend three names for appointment as the vice-chancellor.

“The selection committee will send three names for the post of vice chancellor of which one

will be appointed,” said Tripathee. The VC will appoint the registrar and rector.

Amendment in the TU Act 2016 also eases the other technical problems in other educational bodies.

The Council of Technical Education and Vocational Training (CTEVT) and Higher Secondary Education Board (HSEB) do not have top post officials and this has badly affected their educational programmes.

These two bodies are now being over seen by the earlier executive directors but the bodies have not launched any programmes or passed annual budget because they do not have their assembly members or academic council members. These problems are also going to be solved soon now.
