KATHMANDU, APRIL 13
After receiving assurances from the government's representatives to take action against the culprits of Violence Against Women victims, the Occupy Baluwatar campaigners have halted their ongoing protests for 15 days from today.
Secretary at the Office of the Prime Minister Rajuman Singh Malla, Senior advocate Sapana Pradhan Malla, National Women Commission Spokesperson Mohana Ansari and Joint Attorney General Thok Prasad Siwakoti today visited the protest site in front of the prime minister's residence in Baluwatar and assured them of addressing the demands within the next 15 days. Earlier, an eight-member probe committed formed under the coordination of Rajuman Singh Malla, Secretary at the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers, on December 30 had failed to address the concerns of VAW victims. Chairman of the interim election council Khil Raj Regmi had held talks with the campaigners yesterday, requesting some time to look into and resolve the issues. Secretary Malla has pledged to provide justice to VAW victims within the given deadline. Likewise, commending the peaceful protests launched by the campaigners, Ansari pledged her solidarity to work for the welfare of women and to raise voice against all acts of violence against women and girls. Meanwhile, Campaigner Kala Rai welcomed the government's response and hoped that the government would keep its word this time.
