VDCs running sans office buildings

Jhapa, July 9:

The VDCs have resumed official work at their workplaces after the Maoist-led displacement, but they lack office blocks.

The Maoists had destroyed 44 of 47 VDC offices in Jhapa district during the insurgency. Twelve of them were completely devastated while 32 suffered minor damages. However, three VDC offices at Chandragadhi, Duhagadhi and Garamani were left un-harmed.

According to the statistics of the Jhapa district development committee, the damages at the VDC blocks amounted to Rs 1,98,86,08,400. This did not include partial damages caused to three municipality blocks in Jhapa.

Completely devastated VDC blocks were situated at Budhbare, Lakhanpur, Rajgarh, Chailadubba, Shantinagar, Kumarkhod, Kohabara, Pathamari, Kechana, Radandubba, Sharnamati and Chakchaki. Some VDC offices resumed work in their own buildings after reconstruction while others rented houses.

According to Jhapa district development committee, Kechana, Lakhanpur, Juropani, Dharampur, Chakchaki, Thangabari, Goldhap, Rajgard VDCs rented office blocks.

Similarly, Shivagunj VDC ran its office from the community building while Sharanamati VDC opened the office at sub-health post and Prithvinagar VDC stayed at the resettlement company building.
