Ward members demand monthly salary

Dhangadi, May 12

Ward members of Dhangadi sub-metropolis of Kailali in Province 7 today held a meeting in Dhangadi demanding monthly salary.

“We too are elected by the people, so it's not fair for the provincial government to fix salary and perks only for senior representatives,” said Dhangadi sub-metropolis Ward member Subas Chand at the meeting today, adding that a larger gathering of ward members of all 88 local bodies in the province was due in a few days.

Dhangadi sub-metropolis Ward member Chhatra Bahadur Badaila said ignoring ward members while deciding monthly pay and perks was sheer disrespect for representatives elected through people's votes. “We are not demanding any particular amount in salary, our concern is that the provincial government could have at least made sure that we were not left out when salaries were proposed for elected representative of local bodies,” he said, adding that they would convey their concern to the mayor and the deputy mayor, and later to the provincial government, if required.

On their part, Mayor Nripa Bahadur Bada and Deputy-mayor Shushila Mishra Bhatta said they supported the ward members' concern. “It makes sense to demand a fair amount in monthly payment when other local representatives are getting something,” said the mayor, adding he was serious about the issue and would convey the concern to the provincial government. It is important to note that ward members currently receive Rs 1,200 as allowance for each meeting.

The provincial government is all set to table a bill proposing salary and perks for local representatives higher in rank than ward members, such as ministers and legislators.
