Taplejung, April 13:

Devi Maya Poudel of Chokpur in Phoolbari VDC-5 has to walk for hours to fetch water from the Tamor river. Many local women like Devi Maya have been forced to set out early in the morning to fetch water after a tap at Kaijle went dry.

People in rural areas of Taplejung district have been facing a shortage of potable water with the drying up of main sources.

Due to the shortage of water, farmers have been unable to plant seasonal crops. There is a fear of famine if draught continues, said Himal Neupane, a farmer of Khamlung-6.
