Wildlife, habitat protection campaign launched in CNP

CHITWAN: Chitwan National Park (CNP) has launched a campaign to check the conservation of wildlife and their habitats which becomes vulnerable during the monsoon season.

The poachers remain active during the monsoon since the park remains deserted as a result of muddy trails, outgrown weeds, and other barriers, according to the CNP Information Officer Nurendra Aryal.

He said that the fishing off the ground water sources using banned nets is common in the region during this time.

Under the campaign, it has been set to intensify the patrol in the sensitive area using various mediums of transportation including boat, vehicle, bicycle, elephant ride and walking, Aryal said adding that a round-the-clock vigil would be kept in the area where wildlife gather.

Various stakeholders including District Forest Office, Community Forest Office, Nepal Army, Local Poaching Control, Central Management Committee, and youth awareness sub-committees, locals among others would take part in the campaign, CNP Chief Conservation Officer Ram Chandra Kandel said.

Additionally, an awareness programme to educate locals informing them about the conservation of wildlife would be carried out, Kandel added.

The three-month campaign would conclude by October 18.
