Women boycott municipal assembly meet

Bara, September 1

Female local representatives elected from Nepal Communist Party boycotted the fourth municipal assembly of Nijgadh Municipality held in Bara today.

Deputy Mayor Lila Devi Lamichhane said they boycotted the meeting to protest Mayor Suresh Kumar Khanal’s unilateral decision calling the meeting on the eve of women’s festival —Teej, without holding discussion with them.

Mayor Khanal had called the executive meeting at 11:00 am and municipal meeting at 1:00 pm today.

Women representatives also issued a statement expressing dissatisfaction with Mayor Khanal. A delegation comprising ward chairs and executive members led by Deputy Mayor Lamichhane reached Khanal’s office and handed the statement

to him today.

The statement has accused Mayor Khanal of imposing his decision in an impractical manner. The statement read that the municipal meeting was called without prior consent of the executive, to trouble female representatives.

Executive member Jagat Kumari Adhikari said she received a message regarding today’s meeting on her mobile. “Earlier, we used to receive such messages three days before the executive meeting and information regarding assembly meeting reached other members one week before with the agenda,” she said.
