Women hail free health camp

  • Bajura women are putting health needs on hold due to financial constraints

Bajura, February 19

A free health camp that was set up in Bajura district yesterday has had a positive impact as many women suffering from uterine prolapse have finally found some respite.

“Among other districts in the far western region, Bajura records the highest number of women suffering from the condition, in which pelvic floor muscles and ligaments weaken and fail to support the uterus,” said Camp Coordinator Ram Bahadur Malla.

The camp set up by Far-Western Regional Health Directorate and District Public Health Office with the technical assistance of Nepalgunj Medical College offered diagnosis of gynecological disorders and surgery, added Malla.

“Service seekers come from remote parts of the district and are given Rs 1,000 for transport and Rs 500 for food,” said the coordinator.

Jayananda Upadhyay, 60, of Badimalika Municipality-9 has been suffering from uterine prolapse for 21 years. The mother of three was unable to get treatment due to financial constraints.  “Thanks to the free camp, I have found respite and cure after living with it for more than two decades,” said Upadhyay.

Similar stories poured out from women across the region. “When I heard of free heath camp set up in our own locality, I came to seek treatment,” said 70-year-old Durga Bohora. Hailing from Kolti-9 municipality, she said she was suffering from uterine prolapse for the last five years and had stalled her treatment due to lack of financial means.

As many as eight women like Upadhyay and Bohora have benefited from the camp and many more are heading to the camp to avail the services, according to Coordinator Malla.
