KATHMANDU, MARCH 22
World Water Day 2025 is being celebrated in Nepal today with various programs across the country. Observed annually on March 22 at the call of the United Nations, the day emphasizes the importance of freshwater conservation and advocates for its sustainable management.
The theme for this year's World Water Day is "Glacier Conservation." The day highlights the urgent need to protect water resources, including glaciers, which play a crucial role in sustaining life. Glacier meltwater is essential for drinking water, agriculture, industry, clean energy production, and maintaining healthy ecosystems. However, due to climate change, glaciers are melting at an accelerated rate, disrupting the water cycle and making it more unpredictable. This change has led to altered meltwater flows, increased risks of floods, droughts, landslides, and rising sea levels, threatening both people and ecosystems, according to the United Nations.
To mitigate and adapt to climate change, glacier preservation must be a top priority, the UN has stated. "Saving our glaciers is a survival strategy for people and the planet," the organization emphasized.
In Nepal, a week-long program is being organized under the Nepal National Glaciers, Water, and Weather Week (NNGWWW)-an annual national-level event that brings together stakeholders from Nepal's water sector. The event marks World Day of Glaciers on March 21, World Water Day on March 22, and World Meteorological Day on March 23.
