KATHMANDU, JANUARY 26
While CPN (UML) General Secretary Shankar Pokhrel said that cooperation in government between the two major political parties-UML and Nepali Congress-is stronger, Nepali Congress General Secretary Gagan Kumar Thapa stated that he could outperform the current Prime Minister.
In a press conference organised by Press Chautari Nepal in Bardibas, General Secretary Pokhrel clarified that the country's two major parties-the Nepali Congress (NC) and the UML- have reached an agreement and trust on how to run the government.
Meanwhile, at an event in Bhaktapur on Sunday, Thapa expressed conviction that future youth-led leadership would outperform current and former prime ministers.
"I firmly believe that we can do better as prime ministers than the current prime minister, the future Prime Minister, or the previous prime ministers," Thapa said. "If we replace the current prime minister this evening and if one of us is appointed as prime minister, we will run a better government than the current one."
He stated that he took the initiative to run for the leadership of the NC's parliamentary party because he believed he could better run the country than anyone doing now.
Thapa emphasised that if there is a discussion about another option or system, the next ten years will be wasted, and that the burden of a failed system should not be borne. He stated that it is natural for parties to win and lose in elections held every five years, and that everyone should accept this.
According to him, while it is not uncommon for a leader to become a minister or prime minister, changing leadership is critical, and if given the opportunity, they have the potential to run the country better than the current prime minister. He stated that he worked hard for it and that he would accept the outcome.
Thapa stated that the NC should not wait for the 2027 elections, but rather seize the current opportunity to work for the country's and people's progress.
On the other hand, UML General Secretary Pokharel stated, "CPN-UML has embarked on the 'Mission-2027' campaign. In the 2027 general elections, UML will proceed with a firm determination to form the government by securing a clear majority."
