Animal stories: Chausies

Chausies are large, muscular cats that combine the nature of a domestic cat with the beauty and elegance of a jungle cat. The breed name Chausie was derived from the scientific name of the Jungle Cat, which is Felis Chaus. The ideal Chausies are described as fearless but not aggressive cats. They are tall, lean and very long cats, with their hind legs rising slightly higher than the front. They have medium-sized, gently wedge-shaped head with large, tufted ears. They are almost exactly twice as long as they are tall. Chausies are also considered twice as tall as a domestic cat and can be 2-3 times as heavy. These breeds are known for their wonderful speed and nearly six-foot vertical leap.

Chausies are typically sweet-natured and very affectionate cats. They are very “dog like” in their manner, very alert and intelligent. They are extremely loyal and loving to their humans and also get along well with other pets. Their muscular build and wild ancestry enable them to be quite athletic and fast. They rarely sit in one place for very long.

Coat colour

Colours include black, black smoke to shade of silver, black with silver ticking, ticked golden to reddish fawn with darker markings on ears, legs and tail. Otherwise the body is virtually free of markings.

Temperament

Chausies demand attention and reward it with affection. Highly intelligent with grace and agility. These breeds can be fine with other cats, and dogs as well, but they aren’t an ideal choice for people with very young children.

Lifespan

They have a life time of 10-12 years.

Pet grooming

Chausie’s short coat requires little more attention than an occasional bath and brushing. Regular trimming of the nails is also necessary.

Country of origin

Egypt: The Chausie, also called the Nile Cat because of it’s Egyptian heritage, is a combination of a domestic Cat bred with the Jungle Cat. Originally a hybrid of the African Jungle Cat, the Chausie with its beautiful golden or melanistic (black) coat captures the look and feel of the wild in a domestic cat. The Chausie is an effort to preserve the stunning wild look by reproducing it in a loving and friendly, domestic cat. Chausies are a relatively new breed, having been foundation registered with TICA in July of 1995. The Chausie is currently striving for championship status in the TICA, and continues to grow in popularity. Their size, look, and manner all hinting at their proud wild heritage.
